Explain Risk-based testing?

Risk-based testing

In Risk-based testing we manage our testing efforts in such a way so at lessen the risk when the product ships. Risk-based testing uses risk to prioritize and emphasize the suitable tests during test execution. Risk-based testing involves both mitigation - testing to provide opportunities to reduce the chances of defects, especially high-impact defects - and contingency - testing to identify work-arounds to make the defects that do get past us less painful.

Exploring Risk-based Testing and Its Implications - This paper examines what is implied by risk-based testing, shows that its practice requires an understanding of risk, and points to the need for research into the topic and the development of a body of knowledge to underpin it.

Risk Based Testing and Metrics - This paper provides an overview of risk analysis fundamentals, focusing on software testing with the key objectives of reducing the cost of the project test phase and reducing future potential production costs by optimising the test process. The phases of Risk Identification, Risk Strategy, Risk Assessment, Risk Mitigation (Reduction) and Risk Prediction are discussed. Of particular interest is the use of metrics to identify the probability and the consequences of individual risks (errors) if they occur, and to monitor test progress.
